St. Martin de Porres Knitting Angels was established in 2008. We started by knitting prayer shawls for homebound parishioners. We expanded our service to others in need and now send shawls, afghans, lapghans, chemo hats & sleeves, scarfs, baby items such as sweaters, blankets, hats, wash clothes, Teddy Bears, etc.
We knit Baptismal Blankets that are presented to all the newly baptized here at St. Martin de Porres. For Christmas we made 150 Teddy Bears for our parish "Christ Child" program. Additionally, we donate locally to "People Who Succeed," the Cancer Center, and to Veterans. We also send boxes of items to other areas in need including the following: Christ Child Society of New Jersey, Appalachian Outreach in Kentucky, and Rev. Poling in New York. All of which distribute our items to the needy. It is so gratifying to know these items are appreciated. We accept donations of yarn, gift cards from local stores such as JoAnn's, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or monetary donations to help with the cost of postage for the packages we mail to those in need. Our meetings are held every Thursday from 2 to 4 pm in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to join us. Whether you knit, crochet, or are interested in learning how to, we have members willing to teach or exchange tips. It is a good opportunity to meet people, share ideas, and to provide a service for those in need. We also unite in prayer for those in need at each meeting.
